KFL turns 50!

2026 is a big year for the team at Kidneys for Life as it marks our 50th anniversary.

The charity was registered in May 1976 as the ‘Dialysis Unit Fund – Manchester Royal Infirmary’ then just one year later the charity became ‘Manchester Royal Infirmary and Booth Hall Renal Unit Fund’. The charity was renamed Kidneys for Life fundraising for MINT in 2007 and finally Kidneys for Life in 2024!

The first Trustees of the charity were Professor Sir Netar Mallick, Mr John Irlam, Professor Ian Briercliffe Houston & Mr Neil Bradley. Mr Bob Johnson became a Trustee in November 1976.

We have been reading through the archive of Trustee meetings – they are fascinating and show how patient wellbeing, staff and patient education, research and innovation have always been of the utmost importance – themes very much echoed by our current Board of Trustees.

We’d love to hear your memories and see old photos of people who have helped on your renal journeys and over the coming months we’ll share some of the archives with you too.

There are very few photos in the KFL archive, but we found this one and had to share – we’d love to see and hear your memories too – please do get in touch
