Travel Insurance for Kidney Patients

Travelling abroad can be tricky if you’re a kidney patient, especially when it comes to insurance.

We have been asked about about the implications travel post Brexit and also the impact of on Holiday Dialysis. Here is some information from Kidney Care UK about this.

Please also see this article about Travel Insurance for Kidney Conditions Explained which may be of interest.

Below is a list of insurance companies offering holiday insurance to kidney patients, which has been reproduced with the kind permission of MRI Kidney Patient Association.  These are NOT recommendations.  Each patient is different and all companies assess each case individually.  You should ring round or obtain quotes online to find the most suitable for you, but remember as you will probably have to answer the same questions to each company it may take you some time.

Remember that in Europe, in addition to the correct holiday insurance, you should also carry a ‘Global Healthcare Insurance Card’ (GHIC). More information on the GHIC and EHIC cards can be found here.

A word of warning – many insurance companies take on new policies without asking any medical questions. They are able to do this because they rely on a clause in the small print, which says that they will not cover pre-existing medical conditions. Patients must realise that such policies do not give them insurance cover, and that any claims made as a result (both directly and indirectly) of existing kidney disease or other illness under such a policy, would not be honoured in the event of a claim.

Good luck and please do let us know how you get on so that we can build up a picture of what is available and we can add or remove companies when necessary.
